Daily Notes, May 25

Wednesday May 25, 2011

1.           Go over checklist.
2.           Today’s in-class writing, draft portfolio introduction.
a.     First, examine the Amy Williams letter. In what ways does this letter seem to meet the needs of our assignment? In what ways does it not seem to meet the needs of our assignment?
b.     Paste the process notes for your text-based paper, qualitative paper, and Google Maps project into one document. Begin revising the document so that it reflects the goals of the introductory essay:
                                                        i.     Introduce the papers you’ve selected, explaining the assignment and/or rhetorical situation for the work. Remember that most of your readers will be unfamiliar with your class, so you need to make sure that they know what purpose you were trying to meet in your pieces.
ii.     Use those papers as evidence to illustrate the extent to which your writing has met the course goals. Please refer to or quote specific elements from your papers to support your claims. Which parts of your writing can help you specifically meet this goal? Remember to consider that you should also point to some of your weaknesses as a writer and what you have done to try to improve upon them. Honesty is what I/we value most in this portfolio. Not interested in flattery, either of yourself or of me/us.
iii.     Conduct brief peer critique to give feedback on how well the introduction argues for the writer’s development over the first year of DU.
c.      Post your draft to the blog using the label “sec xx”, replacing the “xx” with your section number.
3.           Office hours
a.     Thursday 5/26: 11 – 4
b.     Tuesday 5/31: 11 – 2
c.      Wednesday 6/1: 11 – 2
d.     Thursday 6/2: 11 – 2
