Westin Underberger- Process Draft

Dear Reader,

This paper is about a study that was performed to see whether or not people that live outside the state of California hold a bias against the Los Angeles Lakers. As a student at the University of Denver, one of the most common quotes I hear around campus is: “Lakers suck” or “I hate the Lakers.” As a result, it has given me the idea to discover if people outside of the state of California are truly opposed to the Lakers. By surveying the population at the University of Denver, it will provide a greater insight on the opinions of the Lakers from a group of people that are not from the city of Los Angeles. It is my hope that the survey results will show me how ones hometown effects the feelings they have towards other teams.

I chose this topic because the city of Los Angeles is where I grew up, and upon hearing so much hatred and disgust towards the city and its basketball team, I have been extremely curious as to who are people that are Lakers fans, and whether or not it is a regional thing.

Sincerely,
Westin Underberger

  1. Your topic is about whether or not people outside the state of California have a bias against the Los Angles Lakers, and why this may or may not be. It's an interesting and unique topic, and from growing up in California (and perhaps already knowing a bit about sports and people's opinions depending on location and team interest), you probably already have previous knowledge of what you can write about.

I think it's really important to start off with such background information because it gives you a good basis when writing your paper. In this paper specifically, though, remember to keep from showing your own opinions and reflecting mostly on those of other people. I'm not a sports fan myself, so I'm not sure how many people you'll be able to get decent information from, but you probably know better than I do.

Because it's more of an obscure subject, you may find it difficult to get information, and will have to do a pretty decent job of presenting your information in a thorough, understandable manner.

I don't know how far you are into the writing of the paper yet, or how much information you've gotten, but hopefully you've found it isn't too complex of a subject. I don't know how many sources there are out there, but I'm guessing from the obvious popularity of sports you'll be able to find at least some. Comparing it to the biases of other sports teams will help you out and give you more to write about, as well as having quite a few questions on opinion for the people you are interviewing. Other than that, you've already displayed nice sentence structure and layout in your process note, so be sure not to lose that when you write your essay.

  2. 1. Your topic for the most part is very clear. However, the topic choice could be narrowed
down some so that it is clear exactly what your research question is concerning. Will you just ask DU freshman? Or will your data come from an older generation? A possible research question that you may ask on your questionnaire or whatever form of of data research you choose to use is "what are some of the reasons that you hate the Lakers?" This might give you information of why the team is disliked to non-California natives. You are also going to need supporting data about the success of the Lakers in a general sense.
    2. Given that you don't have anything yet or your qualitative draft, it will be interesting to see how you take this topic and make it into qualitative research. This will be good, but it will need a lot of work.
