Corey Walkovitz - Process Draft

Dear Reader,
This paper is about the correlation, if any, between student employment and grade point average. There are many students that are forced to have jobs for tuition, parental needs, or just to have money to live. In my paper I will look at how having a job affects the students grade point average and see if having a job causes a person to obtain lower, or higher, grades. By surveying and interviewing students, I will determine if having a job affects their schoolwork and how it affects them, whether is adds more stress or gives them time to break away from school.
I chose this topic because I know that having a job and trying to deal with school and life is all very stressful. Although some people can manage their school life and work life, being a science major, I choose to not work due to the many hours of classes and homework I have.

Sincerely,
Corey Walkovitz

  1. Correy,

First off, you talk about a correlation between students with jobs and grades. What correlation do you believe exist? Jobs negatively effect grades or vice versus. I would like a clarification on your hypothesis or stand on the issue. Later you talk a lot about why you chose your topic and your personal interest invested in the issue because you, yourself "understand" what having a job and doing school work is like. However, later you state that you choose to not have a job because of the amount of school work that you currently have. So i have to ask "how do you understand what it is like having a job and doing school work?" you should really elaborate and be more clear about what exactly you are talking about. Next i would like to point out how you do not talk at all about the structure of your essay and do not go into much detail about how your research will be laid out and conducted. The only thing you say is "By surveying and interviewing students, I will determine if having a job affects their schoolwork and how it affects them" which is very vague and does not give me any idea about how your paper will look at the end.
After reading your rough draft it seems that your letter properly describes what you are doing with your essay. However, like i said earlier i believe that you could get into more detail about each section (I.E. My introduction explains blah blah.)

  2. Your process draft seems to be focused so far on your topic of the impact of jobs on grades. This seems like an interesting topic, but I am not sure how you are going to find a correlation just based on the number of students who choose to work and study? I feel like there are many other reasons for students working, if they are not able to go to school unless they are working then they really have no choice. These students who are working for school may have added incentive over those who are merely going here because their parents think that they need a deree to be successful. There is a lot that you could do with this subject I just think that you need to specify in your questionaire how you plan to focus this paper. Are you planning on focusing on work study jobs or off campus jobs or not discriminating? I think that students who need work study may be more inclined to work to pay for school but they are also often able to do school work while at their work study job. This may have a smaller impact on their studies. I think that your going in the right direction with your draft as long as you use your sources to support the data that you find in your questionaire.
